Teaching Innovations and Disruptive Andragogy

With more than 20 years experience as a strategist, executive and negotiator, Marcinko is considered one of the nation’s healthcare industry experts. He is a strategic advisor to healthcare executives, boards, physician groups and other healthcare companies. He is known for his practical advice focusing on a value-based care [VBC] risk environment. In addition, he is a seasoned negotiator who has successfully completed transactions involving payer contracts, physician compensation, service line development, acquisition/sale of wound care centers, surgical and imaging centers, restructuring of employed physician groups and developing clinically integrated networks. This provides a unique viewpoint to not only study industry trends but operate in the ‘trenches’ which gives a deep understanding of healthcare delivery.

Given this vast experience with health systems, Marcinko will challenge the industry’s conventional wisdom when believed it is not supported by evidence and/or it will not provide desired results.  While clients may not always agree with his perspective, they appreciate that he challenges them so that they will consider different points of view. He fully knows that the health systems require realistic strategies (both short-term and long-term) that are financially feasible and will be supported by the majority of their practicing physicians

Seminars and Heutagogic Teaching Presentations

The economy of the United States Healthcare System has recently edged out Germany as the fourth-largest economy in the world. Like most significant economies, the US Healthcare System is replete with politics, complexities, and special interests that prevent rapid change or innovation.

Our healthcare industry has always been quick to embrace new theories and policies for delivering and financing care, such as ‘population health’, accountable care organizations [ACOs] and the ‘move to value.’ Unfortunately, while most of these ideas sounded good in concept, they failed in practice, and many early adopters and fast followers paid a heavy price. This eventuality provides a factual framework for current and future market conditions.

For example, today, health systems, physicians, and other healthcare providers face unprecedented headwinds, including hyperinflation in employment and supply expenses, economic pressures from powerful commercial payers, and grossly underfunded government Medicare reimbursement. To be successful, an organization must focus on strategies that can be impactful.

It is clear the nation’s health system is on an unsustainable economic course and disruption is inevitable. There will be winners and losers in the post-disruption healthcare world much like there were after the housing bubble. Those health systems that focus on the fundamentals of smart revenue growth, development of critical service lines, thoughtful expense management, asset rationalization and physician collaboration with a culture focused on measurement, urgency and results will position themselves to be one of the winners.

Most health systems have invested hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars in facilities, equipment, and highly specialized workforce to meet the needs of their community. They must ensure that their strategic focus optimizes the financial performance of their capital-intensive inpatient and outpatient services. Health systems cannot abandon their capital structure and emulate Amazon or Google, as many industry pundits imply. The content provided is based on decades of experience in the field working with physicians, negotiating managed care contracts, developing co-management structures, etc. The presentations provide practical recommendations to ensure an organization’s short and long-term success during these turbulent times.

And so, every seminar, Zoom, tele-conference interview or presentation is tailored to address critical issues facing each client to achieve real measurable results. A broad range of traditional and next-generation presentations include:

  • Board and management retreats and workshops
  • Hospital-physician employment and contracting strategies
  • Joint venture structuring, and negotiating support
  • Strategic overview assessment
  • Physician-hospital negotiation, mediation, and dispute resolution
  • Structuring/restructuring affiliated physician organizations/groups
  • Managed care negotiating support
  • Due diligence on acquisitions and mergers (special expertise in imaging centers)
  • Expert witness for physician, managed care, joint venture, CON, and related services
  • Negotiating the purchase or sale of a healthcare business
  • Investment Policy Statements
  • Comprehensive Financial Planning
  • Focused Estate Planning
  • Medical Practice Management

  • Retirement Planning
